MRSA – multi-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus

What is MRSA ?

MRSA is called “multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus”.

Staphylococcus aureus is a Spherical bacterium that many people (20%, up to 60% at times) in the nose / throat, occurs, without that these people are sick. They say they are settled””. These people represent for your fellow man is no danger. In General, you can treat this infection with antibiotics. MRSA bacteria are often resistant to many antibiotics-insensitive, so that the treatment can be difficult.

I am ill because of MRSA ?

If you have MRSA, it has been demonstrated, you can. as a result, an infection (e.g. a wound), and must then also be treated with antibiotics If you are due to MRSA sick or just settled, your doctor tells you. If you have MRSA, they are your fellow human beings a certain degree of risk.

How is the Transmission ?

The Transmission is mainly via the hands as well.

“Risk factors” are:

  • Prolonged Hospital Stay
  • Treatment in intensive care units
  • Treatment with antibiotics
  • Closer contact with MRSA-colonised people
  • The intravascular catheter e.g. Central venous catheter#
  • Immunosuppression
  • Wounds (post-operative, burns)
  • Skin sores (ulcus cruris, bed sores)

What are the hygienic measures to be carried out ?

Target the prevention of Transmission of MRSA strains to patients and staff.

  • Single room accommodation for the patients
  • Careful hand hygiene – disinfection of the hands after each patient contact and after dropping coat and gloves
  • Wear protective gloves and protective coat
  • Wear a SURGICAL face mask
  • Diagnosis / Operation, always at the end of the program. Surface disinfection is required
  • In the case of linings / consultation studies, the Patient should be accompanied. The visited Department shall be informed in advance
  • In the case of transfers / dismissals both the ambulance as well as the need to
  • The receiving home / hospital must be informed

Each year about 1,000,000 people are infected in Germany, where usually at least 60,000 deaths from MRSA infections / infections.

  • Problem: infections are difficult or impossible to treat because they are often resistant to many antibiotics insensitive.
  • Consequences: More cases of death (high mortality rate), and high cost.
