Medical Education in Germany

Medicine in Germany is the highest level of medical technologies, professionalism of specialists, significant costs for scientific development and research and a large number of public and private clinics. Very many people go to Germany for treatment.

Medical education in Germany is very qualitative, which is confirmed both by international ratings, and the quality of medicine itself and treatment. Universities are well equipped, while students take a lot of practice.

Medical professions in Germany are very in demand and well paid.

Competition

Medical education in Germany is very popular not only among Germans themselves, but also among foreigners, that is why the number of vacancies in universities is limited, and admission committees create new criteria and conditions of admission every year to select the best students.

In connection with a large contest, many entrants are put on the waiting list, students with poor or average grades often do not pass, admission commissions take only the best of the best to study.

The average score of a foreign entrant should not be less than 4.5 points (both in school and university). Applicants with poor academic performance are strongly advised to first enter Studienkolleg (after graduation, the grades received in it will be taken into account upon admission).

If there is already begun or finished medical education

Medical education in Germany, unlike most other specialties, is not divided into baccalaureate and magistracy, i.e. to enter the magistracy there is no possibility. Foreign applicants who have completed a minimum of three years of study in the field of medicine, psychotherapy or pharmaceuticals, can confirm a diploma or academic certificate in the central office of Germany for the confirmation of foreign documents on medical education and enroll immediately for a higher semester.

Knowledge of the language

Training in Germany is possible exclusively in German, with the knowledge must be at a very high level, you need to get good or excellent grades in language exams:

  • TestDaF
  • DSH

Also, almost all German universities accept certificates:

  • ZOP / C2
  • GDS
  • KDS
  • DSD

Entry exams

There are no entrance exams, the selection of students is based on the results of evaluations received at school, at a university or in Studiocinlleg, which is why good academic performance is very important.

We recommend that you pass the TestAS. This test will determine your ability to study in Germany and increase the chances of admission.

Underworking during training

Underworking during training for medical students is not a very good idea. Although students have the full right to work 120 full or 240 part-time days a year while studying, it should be remembered that studying in this specialty in Germany, as in other countries, is very time-consuming and it is necessary to teach and prepare for examinations almost all the time, therefore students simply do not have time to earn money.

Cost of education

In connection with the recent reforms in Germany, studies in most state universities in Germany are now free. Students only need to pay a student semester fee from 100 to 300 euros per semester (depending on the federal land) and pay for housing, food and so on.

But we remind that foreign students to obtain a study visa in Germany will necessarily need either a blocked account for 8,640 euros, or a guarantee of a German citizen.

Scholarships

German universities do not pay students scholarships. Many non-state, and even party funds are engaged in scholarship payments. The scholarship is awarded, as a rule, starting from the 3rd year to the most diligent students. The size of the scholarship is calculated in such a way that it sufficed for life. There are also funds that provide scholarship support to students and graduate students.

Duration of study

Studies in this specialty last for an average of 12 semesters (ie 6 years). Not many fit into this period and extend their studies for another couple of semesters.

Study Structure

The program of medical education in German universities is as follows:

  1. Preclinical stage / Vorklinische Semester (1-4 semesters). You can start only in the winter semester. At this stage, the medical student acquires knowledge in the field of natural, basic medical and human sciences, as well as skills in providing emergency medical care and patient care. At this stage, students study the following subjects: physics, chemistry, biology, medical terminology, physiology, biochemistry, anatomy, histology, medical psychology. Just like students from other universities, they are writing essays, act as essay editor, writing scientific articles. Before graduation at this stage, the student will need to undergo a three-month practice of caring for sick people in hospitals or clinics and many short-term practices in different departments of hospitals or a two-day first aid course.
  2. First State Examination / 1. Staatsexamen. After the completion of the training within the preclinical stage, the First State Examination is held, after successful delivery of which the student is admitted to the program of clinical stages of training.
  3. Clinical stage / Klinische Semester (5-10 semesters). This stage includes the study of natural science and clinical disciplines on general pathology and methods of medical and laboratory examination of the patient. Theoretical knowledge about clinical disciplines is formed, practical skills are learned at the patient’s bed, the algorithm for diagnosing and developing a treatment plan. We study: pharmacology, general medicine, orthopedics, emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, hygiene and environmental disciplines, the study of general pathology, microbiology and immunology, biomathematics, clinical chemistry and hematology, radiology, general pharmacology and toxicology, pathophysiology, genetics, microbiology , history of medicine, general clinical examination (including basic information on therapy, surgery, dermatology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, neurology and pediatrics), as well as Acts on the subjects that were studied at the previous stage.
  4. One year of practice / Praktikum. Interconnected clinico-practical training in the university clinic or in one of the clinical hospitals. An equivalent practice (internship) is possible outside Germany. In the center of training, the knowledge and skills obtained during the whole period of training are tested for each clinical case. Practical activity of the trainee is conducted under the supervision of the supervising physician. The training includes participation in clinical discussions (conferences), as well as on ambulance duty. The trainee can not be involved in activities that are not related to the deepening of his education.
  5. Second State Exam / 2. Staatsexamen. After the successful completion of the practice, the Second State Exam is passed. If this exam is passed successfully, a doctor’s diploma is issued with the right to work in the profession.

After study

After receiving medical education in Germany, graduates have the right to stay here to live and work provided that they will find work on the received qualification within a year and a half after graduation from the university.
