Why do lava flows happen?
Why do lava flows happen?
Lava forms when magma erupts from a volcano. As pressure is released gases, dissolved in the magma, bubble out so the composition of lava changes. Most lava flows are formed by the eruption of hot (around 1200oC) basalt magma, (see video clip above).
Where are lava flows found?
They are very common on fast-spreading mid-ocean ridges such as the East Pacific Rise. Sheet flows form at much higher eruption rates than pillow flows. The high eruption rates allow rivers of lavas to form that can flow across the seafloor.
How old is the lava flow?
The rest of the flows are over 1,500 years in age.
What is lava flow called?
The very viscous nature of these lava cause them to not flow far from the vent, causing the lava to form a lava dome at the vent. When a dome forms on an inclined surface it can flow in short thick flows called coulées (dome flows). These flows often travel only a few kilometers from the vent.
Can you drink lava?
If you tried to eat it, you would suffer burns before you ever got it in your mouth. If it was poured into your open mouth by someone else, it would cause third degree burns. You wouldn’t be able to swallow it — lava is molten rock, and as such, is extraordinarily dense and viscous.
What is the most powerful type of volcano?
A supervolcano must erupt more than 1,000 cubic km (240 cubic miles) of material, compared with 1.2 km3 for Mount St. Helens or 25 km3 for Mount Pinatubo, a large eruption in the Philippines in 1991. Not surprisingly, supervolcanoes are the most dangerous type of volcano.
What are the similarities and differences between magma and lava?
Magma is composed of molten rock and is stored in the Earth’s crust. Lava is magma that reaches the surface of our planet through a volcano vent.
Why do magma and lava have different names?
Magma comes from an Italian word that means a thick, pasty substance, which is how molten rock behaves within the Earth. Lava, another Italian word, means to slide, which is what molten rock does once it reaches the surface.
Is water considered Lava?
If we’re using it as an adjective (definition: covered or saturated with water or another liquid), then lava is a liquid state so it therefore it’s wet. Lava does contain a lot of water, especially prior to eruption (when it’s called magma), but also as it flows across the ground,’ he explained.
What are the structural features of volcano name at least five?
Answer: magma chamber, conduits, vents, craters and slopes.
Should you live near a volcano?
Living near an active volcano can be beneficial as well as dangerous. The soil is fertile, and a lot of volcanic products can be used in everyday life. In addition, the thermal energy from some volcanoes can be used to generate electric power. But if you live too close to a volcano—and it erupts—it can be lethal.
Can extinct volcanoes erupt?
Volcanoes typically are categorized thusly: active (a volcano that has erupted in the past 10,000 years), erupting (an active volcano that is experiencing an eruption), dormant (an active volcano that has the potential to erupt again), and extinct (a volcano that has not erupted in over 10,000 years and is unlikely to …
