Getting More Done In Less Time (Ep. 28)

In July of this year, I hopped on a plane to Portland for the first time to attend the World Domination Summit.

It’s kind of hard to explain what that is, so just imagine over 3,000 creative people – authors, bloggers, musicians, podcasters, entrepreneurs – coming together to hang out, drink a lot of coffee (among other substances), attend sessions, and help each other.

My experience at WDS was amazing, and I became friends with a good number of very awesome people – one of them being Zachary Sexton. Zack is a writer for Asian Efficiency, which is a blog dedicated to helping people master productivity and time management.

Since that’s one of my main focuses here at CIG, I brought Zack onto the show! In this episode, we’ll talk about what “asian efficiency” really is and dive into the techniques we use personally to be more productive.

Things mentioned in this episode:

  • the book that got Zack into being a more productive person
  • Clearing to Neutral
  • Quick capture techniques (and weird animal references)
  • Reticular activating system
  • Inbox Zero – the 43Folders series
  • Boomerang for Gmail – check out more of my favorite email apps as well
  • My morning ritual
  • Check out Zack’s website
  • Follow Zack on Twitter!

Resources of the Week:

  • The Tool: This week I’m recommending that you use a clipboard manager on your computer. If you’re on Windows, check out Clipboard Help+Spell. If you’re on OS X, give CopyClip a try if you want a free option, or dig into the Alfred Powerpack if you want a manager along snippets, workflows, and more (I use Alfred every day).
  • The Learning Resource: The Workflowing podcast by Mike Vardy and Michael Schechter is another amazing resource if you want to learn more about productivity. Give it a listen!

Listener Tip of the Week

This week’s listener tip comes from Ransom Patterson, who is an English major at the College of Wooster and also probably one of the most dedicated listeners of the podcast. You should check out his blog. Check out the episode to hear his tip.

“Hey, I have a great tip too!” – you

On every episode listener tip on each episode before I dive into the main content. Want to be featured on the podcast? I’m looking for tips in each of these categories:

  • General college tips – learning, studying, productivity, etc
  • Jobs and internships
  • Money management

If you’d like your tip featured on the show, email it or tweet it to me!

Also, remember to leave your name – and if you’d like me to give a shoutout to something of yours (your website, twitter profile, etc), mention that as well.

A couple great quotes from our conversation:

“Your brain is for having ideas, not storing them.” – David Allen | Tweet This

“The only ways to stop your brain from reminding you about a project are to either do it, or write it down.” | Tweet This

“Consistently do what is important to you. Productivity is more about the process than the end goal.” | Tweet This

If you enjoyed this episode, subscribe to the podcast on iTunes! It’s easy, you’ll get new episodes automatically, and it also helps the show gain exposure 🙂
